The update
According to M9.news, filmmaker SS Rajamouli's promotional approach for his upcoming film Varanasi has become a topic of discussion due to its restrained pace. The movie, which marks Rajamouli's first collaboration with Mahesh Babu, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
The project is described as one of the most expensive of the director's career, featuring considerable financial investment and international release plans. M9.news reports that with less than six months remaining before the premiere, audiences have not yet seen a conventional teaser or trailer detailing the characters, action sequences, and storytelling.
Context & analysis
So far, the marketing campaign has included the release of a title, character looks, and a glimpse video focusing primarily on visual effects and conceptual imagery rather than extensive narrative footage. This is noted as a shift from Rajamouli's earlier strategies, such as the campaign for RRR, which featured major promotional material and character introduction videos released well in advance.
M9.news notes that a wider promotional campaign will eventually become important given the film's substantial production scale and international ambitions. However, the report states that the current slower pace does not necessarily indicate a problem, as the team may be following a specific strategy to reveal more footage closer to the release date.
It remains to be seen whether a more extensive rollout is planned in the coming months as the April 2027 release approaches.
