The update
The upcoming film Varanasi, directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Mahesh Babu, is projected by its promoters and the entertainment publication TeluguCinema as a major global event with the potential to break box office records. The movie combines adventure-thriller elements with the Ramayana theme and features music by Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani. It is scheduled for release on April 7, 2027.
Producers KL Narayana and SS Karthikeya are currently negotiating theatrical and non-theatrical agreements. According to information cited by TeluguCinema, Dubai-based distribution company Phars Film presently holds the overseas theatrical rights because the firm previously provided financing for the production.
Context & analysis
The source notes that Phars holds these rights as security for the financial backing it extended. However, the production team retains the option to sell the overseas rights to a different distributor if they repay the funds owed to Phars.
The publication reports that Phars recently secured the overseas theatrical rights for Shah Rukh Khan's film King for Rs 175 crore, which is described as the highest-ever overseas theatrical agreement for an Indian film.
In light of this benchmark, TeluguCinema questions whether Varanasi will be able to surpass the King record in international markets. The publication states that the trade will monitor the film's business closely due to its substantial scale and the high level of anticipation surrounding it.
